This type of waste includes everyday, non-hazardous items that are no longer of use, so they need to go. General waste includes furniture, cardboard, clothes, plastics, kitchenware, appliances, carpets, paper, packaging, toys, exercise equipment, electronics, and more. Food products and food waste, soils, and liquids are not accepted as general waste.

Green Waste

If you’re doing a garden clean-up or landscaping project, this waste is composed of biodegradable organic matter. The following types of green waste are generally accepted: grass clippings, leaves, branches and twigs, wood chips and bark, or clippings from shrubs, flowers, and other plants. Soil, dirt, and rocks are not accepted as green waste. Invasive species like bamboo may also be prohibited.

Working on replanting a new lawn? This is the best way to dispose of your old top layer of grass and soil. Only a small amount of green waste is accepted with the soil, and the bin can contain only soil and turf. If you exceed the weight allowance for the bin, additional fees may apply.

How much weight can I put in the bin?

You can put in 150 kg of waste per cubic metre in the bin.

How high can I fill the bin?

The contents must be level with the top of the bin. Extra fees may apply if you overfill the bin.

What can you remove?

Can I keep the bin longer?

Yes! Check with individual companies for their terms. They generally ask that you let them know 24 hours before the scheduled pickup if you want to keep the bin longer.

What can’t you take?

The quick answer is to avoid putting anything into a bin that is dangerous, toxic, illegal, or environmentally unfriendly. In practice, that includes items that are explosive or flammable, such as gas cylinders and containers. Prohibited items also include: asbestos, paint, liquids, fluorescent lights, chemicals, solvents, oils, acids, batteries, medical or biological waste, or radioactive materials. Contact the skip-hire company to ask if you’re unsure about a certain item.
